July 4, 2014 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
Ohio Machine News Release

The Ohio Machine used a fast start and an impeccable finish to pick up a Fourth of July victory against the Chesapeake Bayhawks at Selby Stadium.

The win gave the Machine a season sweep of the back-to-back defending Major League Lacrosse Champions.

After fighting back from a two-goal deficit in the second half, the Machine took a 14-13 fourth-quarter lead after consecutive goals from midfielder Peter Baum. Chesapeake's Matt Mackrides tied the game, but Machine midfielder Jake Bernhardt picked up his second game-winner of the season before attackman Marcus Holman sealed the win. Bernhardt is the club's all-time leader in game winning goals with three.

The Machine moved to 4-6 with the victory while the Bayhawks fell to 3-7 on the year.

Ohio opened the game on a four-goal run in the first five minutes, with three different Machine players picking up two quick points in the process. Midfielder Tom Schreiber scored two of the goals, attackman Logan Schuss had two assists and midfielder Bill McGlone tallied a goal and an assist. After a trio of Chesapeake scores, the two teams traded a goal each as Ohio took a 5-4 lead into the break.

The Bayhawks opened the second quarter with two goals to take their first lead, but Machine midfielder Kyle Harrison added his second goal less than a minute later to tie it at 6-6. The half ended with the Bayhawks leading, 9-8.

Holman scored a 2-point goal just 31 seconds into the second half to swing the lead back in Ohio's favor. Chesapeake followed up with three in a row, but Machine midfielder Jake Bernhardt added a goal with 1.5 seconds left in the quarter.

Holman opened the fourth quarter with a goal as well, tying the game at 12. Chesapeake added one of its own, but Baum countered with his two goals in a row to take the 14-13 lead for Ohio.

Holman led the team with three goals and four points, while Baum had two goals and an assist. Harrison and Schreiber each added two goals for the victors and Schuss finished with two assists.

Goalie Brian Phipps made 12 saves on 26 shots faced. Face-off men Eric O'Brien and Bobby Dattilo combined to go 16-for-32 at the midfield X, with O'Brien finishing 10-of-17.

After being acquired by the Machine in a trade with the New York Lizards on Wednesday, defenseman Steven Waldeck slotted directly into the lineup. He helped lead a defensive stand that held Chesapeake scoreless for the final 2:19 of the game.

Machine rookie midfielder Rob Guida scored his first career goal in the second quarter.

Bernhardt's brother, Jesse, started the game on defense for the Bayhawks.

Chesapeake's Joe Walters tallied four goals and four assists while Drew Westervelt and Ben Hunt each had four points in the loss.

The Machine will return to Selby Stadium on July 19 for the second game of a three-game home stand. Ohio will take on the Charlotte Hounds at 7 p.m. EST. After that, the Machine will paly the Denver Outlaws at 4:30 p.m. EST July 26. Both games will be broadcast live on the CBS Sports Network.
