Ohio Machine News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio (November 8, 2012) - The Ohio Machine (Machine) and Midwest Lacrosse are teaming up with Match4Kim and Be The Match(r) to host a bone marrow drive on Saturday, November 17, from 12-3 p.m. to help grow the registry and find matches for Worthington Kilbourne lacrosse mom Kim Roper and the 10,000+ patients still waiting for a donor.
Fans can meet Ohio Machine players and win prizes being raffled off throughout the afternoon, including tickets to the 2013 home opener, team autographed memorabilia and tickets to the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium and COSI, at Midwest Lacrosse Columbus at 4499 Kenny Road.
The Machine will also be donating $10 for every season ticket purchased at the event on November 17 to Be The Match(r) of the National Marrow Donor Program.
All that is asked on November 17 is for people to come out, get swabbed and have fun....that's it! The process takes about only five minutes with no pain involved!
More than 10,000 patients sit on the waiting list for a bone marrow donor, including Roper who is a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cancer patient. Finding a donor who is a match to Roper is essential in her recovery process. Being diagnosed with the fast-growing cancer in 2009, a bone marrow transplant may possibly be the cure for Roper.
People between the ages of 18 and 44 are particularly encouraged to donate. More than 90% of the time doctors choose registry members between the ages 18-44. Doctors choose donors based on what is best for their patient. Research shows that cells from younger donors lead to more successful transplants but everyone is welcomed and needed.
In addition to Lymphoma, bone marrow transplants are needed for Leukemia patients and victims of immune diseases and other genetic disorders. On average one in every 540 members of Be the Match Registry in the United States will go on to donate bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells to a patient in need.
