Offense Struggles in Paints' 3-2 Loss to Kings

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Chillicothe Paints (3-6), presented by Adena Health System, rallied to tie the game late, but lost 3-2 at home against the Champion City Kings (4-6) Sunday evening.

Champion City's Conor Grove hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the first to give the Kings an early 2-0 lead.

The lead held until on the bottom of the seventh. Dylan Jones doubled to lead off and scored two batters later on a one-out RBI single by Jack Thompson. Two batters later, Nick Ryan collected his first RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to center field, tying the game at two. Chillicothe had the go-ahead runner at second base, but he was left stranded.

Champion City got a lead-off baserunner in the ninth when Jet Swetland reached on an error, then scored later in the inning on a two-out single by Sean Kennedy, giving the Kings a 3-2 lead headed to the bottom of the ninth.

The Paints got the tying runner to second base when Jack Thompson walked with one out and moved to second on a balk, but was unable to score.

Champion City reliever Brandon Eck (1-1) allowed two runs on four hits over 2 1/3 innings en route to his first win of the season. Austin Marchant got the final two outs in the ninth to earn his second save of the year.

Chillicothe reliever Jake Horew (0-1) took the loss, he allowed an unearned run on one hit and struck out a batter.

The Paints start a four-game homestand Tuesday when they welcome the West Virginia Miners to VA Memorial Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The Chillicothe Gazette presents Ross County Sheriff's D.A.R.E. Night and Summer Fun Party.
