NY/NJ Revolution find a 2007 home
July 17, 2006 - Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) News Release
Since its inception, the GLIFL has made every effort to follow through on its promises to its fans. One of those promises was that the 2006 NY/NJ Revolution, a team that played all road games in the league's first year, would find a home for the 2007 season and would play a "full league" schedule with everyone else.
Promise delivered. The 2,500 seat Mennen Sports Arena in Morristown, New Jersey has been announced as the home for the Revolution. The team will play six home games at their new home in what may be the GLIFL's Eastern Division.
Despite a first season that did not go as well as they would have liked, the Revolution are excited about Year Two. "We wanted to establish a team, get organized and do it the right way," said player personnel director Kevin Hanratty. Mission accomplished. Already the Revolution have created relationships with local colleges, ones that will improve the overall talent level on the team. Despite the status of playing all road games, the talent level was not that far off from the rest of the league. Adding players from local colleges in New Jersey and New York will only make the Revolution yet another extremely tough opponent for the rest of the league.
Despite having no home games, the Revolution kept a local presence in the community by helping at charity events. The team regularly worked with American Cancer Society Cancer Walks, and was even found at local Soup Kitchens helping out the less fortunate. The Revolution, now with a home, will add to that by holding football clinics and school visits.
The entertainment factor at games will also be a non-issue, as fans regularly saw Revolution players dancing during games and having a good time, no matter the score. This further emphasized the GLIFL game as an event, not just a football game. Part of the GLIFL experience includes fans going onto the field after games to get autographs from the home team's players and coaches. The Revolution made it a note to stay on the field every game to mingle with fans, despite the fact there is no rule forcing the visiting team to do so.
GLIFL co-founder Jeff Spitaleri used this evidence as why the Revolution will succeed. "Look at what they did without having a home community. They made it their goal to be involved in all the communities, they made it a goal to help everyone else out. What you had there was a group that never gave up no matter what the odds were. Now that they've evened the odds, the GLIFL will have that many more exciting games. This is a great day for the league."
The Great Lakes Indoor Football League finishes its inaugural season with Great Lakes Bowl I, pitting the league's two best teams. The Rochester Raiders will try to make their third meeting a charm against the undefeated Port Huron Pirates on July 22 at 7:30 P.M at Port Huron's McMorran Arena.
