Metropolitan Riveters News Release

NJ/NY - The Metropolitan Riveters are proud to announce that the celebrated career of Kate Leary, a star at Boston College and in the CWHL and SWHL, will continue for a second season in the NWHL. The league's Newcomer of the Year last season, the 26-year-old Leary has signed a contract to return to the Riveters in 2020-21.

In 2019-20, the forward had a Riveters-record 16 goals to go along with 11 assists for 27 points in 22 games. She was named NWHL Player of the Month for December 2019 and earned an invitation to participate in NWHL All-Star Weekend in Boston.

"The NWHL and Riveters have provided me with a great opportunity to continue my hockey career at the professional level," said Leary, a New Hampshire native. "I began playing hockey because I love the game and that is what has continued to carry me through 23 years. While there are still steps to be taken to continue to build the league, the NWHL provides more than 125 female hockey players the opportunity to showcase what our sport is all about. The speed, creativity and talent that is a landmark of women's hockey was on display every weekend this season.

"I am so appreciative of the Riveters family and the experience I had with the team last season. All of the staff was extremely supportive and helpful. Our team was a group from all over the world, and yet we came together and not only competed but enjoyed doing so together. I'm thrilled to be back with the Rivs for another season! We have a good core group back and with some new players in the mix we have a sturdy base to build off of and improve from last year. I can't wait to get back to work with the team and compete for Isobel."

Leary signed with the Riveters last summer after leading the SWHL in Switzerland in goals with 33 in 20 games and leading Lugano to the league championship. Previously, she played two seasons for the CWHL Boston Blades and led the team in scoring both years. At Boston College, Leary scored 42 goals and had 43 assists for 85 points in 149 games.

"We are incredibly happy to welcome Kate back to the Rivs for a second season," said Riveters GM Kate Whitman Annis. "She is a high-skilled forward and a force both on the ice and in the locker room."
