In the Northern Division the first week's game pit: Connecticut Crush @ Philadelphia Phoenix and Rochester Raptors @ Mass Mutiny. In the Great Lakes Division: Cleveland Fusion @ Detroit Demolition and Toledo Spitfire @ Indiana Thunder.
In the Southern Division: Knoxville Summit @ Atlanta Leopards, Nashville Dream @ Alabama Renegades and the Asheville Assault @ Chattanooga Locomotion. In the Gulf Coast Division: Pensacola Power @ Panama City Beach Rumble and Biloxi Herricanes @ New Orleans Spice. In the Mid-West Division: Kansas City Krunch @ St. Louis Slam and Denton Stampede @ Oklahoma City Lightning.
In the Mid-West Division, one of the teams, the Junction City Cavalry had to remove themselves from the 2003 schedule due to losing more than half of their players to the war against Iraq.
"One of the most important things for any start up league is to play the games scheduled. When this happened we had to work hard to fill in the games that the JC Cavalry was supposed to play. Several of the teams that we had already licensed for 2004 stepped up and filled out the schedule for us. It was a massive job to redo the schedule and to get new venues for these games but everyone worked together to make it happen. We've got a great group of owners and in this situation; they showed why they are part of this league. We've tried to anticipate just about everything while building this league, but we never thought about a war taking our players, " states league CEO, Catherine Masters.
The league has made tremendous progress in the past two and a half years and in addition to more the tripling the number of teams, they've built a following which is generating more than 2 million hits per month to their website, designed and produced the first ever, women's football trading cards, played a championship game in front of nearly 6,000 fans and signed a TV deal with The Football Network. "When I started the league I thought there would be a lot of interest, but to be honest, I never expected this. We have lots of other potential owners contacting us almost on a daily basis and we are now moving towards the Western part of the US. Once people get the chance to see women play this game they are hooked," she states.
The media has been a huge help in building the league with appearances on Connie Chung, the NBC Today Show, Nickelodeon and many, many stories and articles in such major publications as Fortune Small Business, The New York Times and....
In addition to the teams playing in the 2003 season, the league has granted licenses to: Roanoke Revenge (VA), Evansville Express (IN), Shoals SmasHers (AL), Denton Stampede (TX), Dallas Dragons (TX) and the Austin Outlaws (TX).
