The National Women's Basketball League announced today that Coach Eileen Mastrio of the Springfield Spirit was selected as Coach of the Year, and Ryan McCallum General Manager of the Tennessee Fury was named Team Executive of the Year.
Coach Mastrio led the Spirit to a 17 â 4 season this year, improving drastically on the 6-14 record of the 2002 Spirit, where she was an assistant coach. Her 17 wins this season also gave her the honor of having the most wins in a single NWBL season. Eileen is a Bentley College graduate and played point guard and served as co-captain for the varsity basketball team. The team was in the final four each season. Eileen also coaches and currently plays for the Nor'easter Storm women's basketball team. This team tours colleges in late October and November throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region.
Ryan McCallum took the Tennesse Fury, who were added to the league on Draft Day (December 2002), and assembled a motivated and enthusiastic staff in very little time. He also was able to gain sponsorship agreements for the team from many local and national companies. The Fury had a very successful inaugural season thanks to the work of Ryan and his staff. Ryan previously worked with the Toronto Raptors (NBA) and Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL). He has graduated with an honors degree in sport management. McCallum attended the University of Tennessee as well as Brock University in Ontario, Canada.
