Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(LANCASTER, CA) Fans returned to the Hangar Saturday still buzzing about the dramatic extra-innings win the night before. Last night, the JetHawks didn't have any ninth inning heroics - and they didn't need them. In a welcome sight to the JetHawks faithful, Lancaster rolled to a 5-3 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.
In the first inning, it appeared the Quakes were on a mission to erase the painful memory of the JetHawks remarkable Friday comeback. They scored two runs in the top half of the first; Clay Fuller walked and Andrew Romine singled, both stole a base and came in to score on three consecutive groundouts to shortstop.
The JetHawks had no intention of letting the Quakes steal their momentum. They answered right back in their half of the first, scoring three runs, two of which came on a Jason Castro double to deep left center. Castro scored later when Nick Moresi drew a bases-loaded walk.
After Jose Duran allowed a lead off home run to lead off the second, he settled into an impressive groove and rolled through the Quakes' lineup for four and a third more innings. On the evening, Duran only allowed three hits, three runs, and struck out two. Duran yielded to Fernando Abad with one out in the sixth, and Abad promptly retired the two hitters he faced. The JetHawks padded their lead in the sixth when Jon Gaston (who led off the frame with a triple) scored on an error by Quakes second basemen P.J. Phillips. The JetHawks fifth and final run came on a Jason Castro RBI single in the seventh.
In the JetHawks half of the seventh, Wes Clements turned to the dominant Chia-Jen Lo, who impressed once again. Lo retired all six hitters he faced and struck out three; on the season, Lo has now struck out an incredible 20 of the 41 batters he has faced. Bryan Hallberg was the final piece of a dominating pitching performance; the River Edge, New Jersey native recorded his second save of the year.
The JetHawks return to the Hangar tomorrow night to face the Quakes at 6 PM. It is a Sunday in the Park, where families can have a catch on the field before the ballgame. Lefthander Jeff Icenogle (0-2, 5.11) will look for his first win against RHP Tim Kiely. The radio broadcast on Magic 1340 and JetHawks.com will begin with the Pre-Game show at 6:45.
