Northern League Names 2009 Rookie Player and Rookie Pitcher of the Year
September 6, 2009 - Northern League (NL) News Release
Winnipeg Goldeyes infielder Adam Frost was named Northern League Rookie Player of the Year, and Schaumburg Flyers pitcher Cephas Howard was selected as the Rookie Pitcher of the Year as voted on by select league personnel and players.
Frost, who was thrust into the starting shortstop position following Wes Long's injury on June 30th , went on to bat .280 with five home runs and 30 stolen bases for the Goldeyes in '09. Frost finished the season ranked third in the league in stolen bases and stolen base percentage (.789) and had been hitting .300 as late as August 14th . Entering the season as a utility infielder, he played six games at second base, 17 at third base, and 57 at shortstop. The 5-11, 165-pounder, was a 21st round selection by the Detroit Tigers in the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft following his junior season at Division III St. Norbert College (De Pere, WI).
Frost only had 29 at bats above the rookie-league level in the Tigers farm system last year, which still classified him as a rookie per Northern League rules.
Howard, who did not yield a run over his last 10 outings of the season, went 3-1 with six saves and a 1.71 ERA for the Schaumburg Flyers. On the year, he had a .217 batting average against and struck out 47 batters in 42 innings.
The 6-5, 240-pound right-hander was signed by the Flyers on May 24th and just completed only his third season pitching in organized baseball. He was originally drafted by the Anaheim Angels in the 37th round of the 2007 MLB Amatuer Draft. Despite having grown up always being a catcher, he was drafted after a successful workout with an Angels scout where it was reported he was throwing 93 miles per hour.
Despite playing in the Angels farm system for two-plus seasons, Howard never threw more than 30 innings in a season, thus still qualifying him as a rookie in the Northern League. Following the completion of the '09 season, Howard has struck out a total of 102 batters in only 89 career innings pitched.
