NL Announces Expanded Season

Mike Stone, the Commissioner of the Northern League announced today that the Northern League will add six games to the 2004 schedule. Each team will have an additional three games at home and three games on the road.

The 2004 Northern League season will officially open on May 21st and will end September 5th, with playoffs to follow. Teams will play fifty-six games within their division and forty games outside their division. "This represents careful and positive expansion of the Northern League season and we look forward to providing more game dates for our fans," Commissioner Stone stated.

The Northern League is made up of ten teams. One of the Northern League teams, the Goldeyes, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba are averaging 7,000 fans a game. Never in independent baseball history has a team averaged 7,000 over a full season, and Winnipeg is not the only Northern League team drawing fans. Attendance figures for all Northern League teams showcase just what a great fan-friendly product the Northern League is producing. The St. Paul Saints are averaging almost 6,000 a game, and are the #3 ranked team in attendance among all independent teams. Average attendance figures for all the leagues have the Northern League at the top.
