NJ State Assembly Honors Morse and the Riveters for Winning the Isobel Cup

Metropolitan Riveters News Release

The Metropolitan Riveters received an official proclamation from the New Jersey State Assembly on Thursday honoring the team's Isobel Cup Championship.

New Jersey native Rebecca Morse proudly represented the team and brought the Isobel Cup to the New Jersey State House in Trenton. Several members of the Assembly took pictures with Morse and the Cup.

"It was a great experience and I was proud to represent the Riveters before the Assembly," said Morse, who has played the last two seasons for the team after an excellent collegiate career at Providence. "All of the community leaders were really supportive of the NWHL. I think we won over some new fans."

Below is a transcript of the address made by Morse to the New Jersey State Assembly.

Good afternoon. My name is Rebecca Morse and I hail proudly from Westfield in the great state of New Jersey.

On behalf of the 2018 Isobel Cup Champion Metropolitan Riveters of the National Women's Hockey League, I'd like to start by thanking Assembly Speaker Coughlin, Assemblywoman Timberlake and Assemblywoman Pintor-Marin for this recognition today.

If you are not familiar with the Riveters or the NWHL, the team and league just completed our third incredible season. To give you an idea of how far we've come in brief time, our championship game was played before an extremely loud, overflow crowd in Newark, and was viewed on Twitter by more than 800,000 fans. It was a day we will never forget. We are growing, and we are bold and empowered.

The Riveters are aligned with the New Jersey Devils - the Devils are my favorite team so here's hoping they have a great run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs! - and you should know that the Riveters are very proud to represent New Jersey and to have won the Isobel Cup for New Jersey.

I grew up in Westfield, dreaming of playing hockey in college and in the major leagues - and I achieved my dream. Women's hockey is one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S. We are in the midst of an extraordinary movement for the game, which includes Team USA winning the gold medal at this year's Olympics.

The reason why I'm representing the club today is not just because I'm a New Jersey native, but also because my teammates - like me - have professional business careers or are pursuing further education. Some are doing both. I was so excited to have this invitation by my home state today that I asked for the day off from work. While we play in the NWHL (and win championships), the Riveters are also robotics engineers, educators, financial analysts, marketing and communications professionals, hockey coaches, trainers and much, much more.

We especially appreciate your recognition today because opportunities like this grow the sport and awareness of our league.

It has been a memorable three weeks since we won the Isobel Cup, and today is the icing on the cake. I hope all of you will come to a Riveters game next season and see first-hand the passion of our fans and our players. This has truly been an honor, and everyone with the Metropolitan Riveters is deeply appreciative. Thank you.
