NFLEL Statement on Alex Leibkind

Published on May 18, 2006 under National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release

It was with enormous sadness that we received news today of the death of former Rhein Fire general manager Alex Leibkind following his recent heart attack in New York.

At this difficult time, our heartfelt sympathy and prayers are with Alex's family and friends, in particular his wife, Tanja.

Alex will be remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of the NFL Europe League. After taking charge of the Rhein Fire late in 1995, his innovative, often daring, approach to marketing and promoting the team established the Fire as one of the league's success stories, with attendance reaching upwards of 40,000.

Under Alex, the Fire created a tradition of staging creative and exciting stadium events, which have served as a benchmark for the league, and were able to reach out into the local community to become an important, vibrant part of Düsseldorf culture.

Alex approached his job with a boundless energy and enthusiasm, constantly pushing the barriers of achievement and inspiring those working with him. He continued to be close to our organization following his departure from the Fire two years ago and this tragic news means that the NFL Europe League has lost, not just a ground-breaking general manager, but a very dear friend.
