Durham, NC— Pensacola Pelicans OF Steve Newson was sold to the Atlanta Braves. Newson, 26, hit .333 with four home runs and 23 RBI's as a late season addition for the Springfield/Ozark Mountain Ducks in 2003.

Newson, who was signed in early July, got off to a great start going 34-88, (.386), in his first month of professional baseball. In just his eighth professional game Newson went 5-for-6 with two home runs and six RBI's against the San Angelo Colts.

Finishing up his collegiate baseball at Chico State University, Newson led the Wildcats in batting average (.344), home runs (10), and runs batted in (42), in 2003. Newson was named a member of the ABCA/Rawlings All-West Baseball First Team. Before joining the Wildcats, Newson played at Delta Junior College.

Newson is the second player sold to a major league organization from the Central League within the last week. Jackson Senators RHP Brandon Parker was sold to the Colorado Rockies last Thursday.
