Bellingham Slam News Release

BLAINE, Wash. - Newly signed center Evan Matteson proved to be a serviceable addition for the Bellingham Slam as he posted a double-double in a 127-105 win over the Salem Soldiers in International Basketball League play on Saturday night at Blaine High School .

Matteson came off the bench to score 17 points and pull down a team-high 11 rebounds. He scored six straight in the second half, helping to build an 11-point lead in an otherwise competitive and spirited first half.

Both teams struggled out of the gate to score on Blaine 's notoriously unfriendly rims, combining for 49 points in the quarter.

In a game that was without any significant runs by either side to that point, the Slam opened the fourth quarter with 11 of the first 14 points to build a 19-point lead and began to put the game out of reach.

The Slam prevented any sort of Salem comeback by raising their aggressiveness on offense midway through the fourth, getting to the free throw line down the stretch and making their foul shots.

Matteson was one of seven Bellingham players to score in double figures, led for the sixth time this season by guard Paul Hafford, who had 27 points. Guard Morris Anderson had 21 points and 6 assists.

IBL leading scorer Chehales Tapscott was once again impressive for Salem, leading his team with 23 points and 15 rebounds.

The victory avenged a loss to the Soldiers in the Slam's home opener on April 23, their only setback this season.

The Slam return to their usual home court at Whatcom Pavilion for a match-up with the Olympia Reign on Friday, June 8. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
