New Player-Coach Announced

Sky Blue FC News Release

Somerset, N.J. (Thursday, August 26, 2010) - Sky Blue FC of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) announced today that assistant coach and three-time Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) All-Star Jennifer Grubb has been added to the team's active roster. The veteran defender will suit up for Sky Blue FC (7-9-4, 25 points) for the first time this Saturday when it takes on her former club, the Washington Freedom (6-8-7, 25 points), in a critical road match-up.

"Jen still has the ability to play at a very high level, and that is something she has proven each day at training," Sky Blue FC head coach Rick Stainton remarked. "She has an incredible soccer intellect, and she is very well respected by the entire team. On the field, she not only brings us an extremely talented player, but she also adds physicality and composure to our already dynamic personnel."

When she played for the Washington Freedom from 2001-03, Grubb was the only player in WUSA history who logged every minute of every single match over its three seasons of operation. Additionally, the three-time WUSA All-Star served as captain of the Freedom during the 2002 and 2003 seasons, and she was instrumental in helping Washington to the 2003 WUSA Championship. This past July, Grubb became just the fifth member of the Hall of Freedom, which is the highest honor for a former Freedom player and equivalent of being the team's Hall of Fame.

"Jen walked in unannounced to one of our open tryouts, and I've been trying to convince her ever since to suit up for us," Sky Blue FC General Manager Gerry Marrone stated. "It is evident from both Jen's current level of play, as well as her past resume, that she brings incredible value to the team, both on and off the field. It is also fitting that she takes her place on the roster the weekend we play the Washington Freedom."

A former defender for the U.S. National Team, Grubb excelled at the University of Notre Dame before turning professional. She was a three-time Player of the Year finalist, and her 83 career points are the most in program history. Her 53 assists for the Irish are seventh all-time for her school and 20th in NCAA history. The USSF "C" License holder has also seen success at the coaching level, and she currently serves as the head coach of the Peddie School, a high school located in Hightstown, New Jersey.

With Sky Blue FC and the Freedom deadlocked in the standings, the victor in Saturday's match will make a huge leap toward its goal of reaching the WPS Playoffs. Sky Blue FC currently has four games left on its regular season slate, while Washington has three matches remaining. Sky Blue FC will return home next Wednesday, September 1st, when it welcomes Marta and FC Gold Pride to Yurcak Field. Kickoff for that game is at 7:00 p.m., and tickets are available now by calling 1-888-SBFC-TIX.
