New Mexico United News Release
Albuquerque, NM - New Mexico United rounded out their preseason slate with an intrasquad friendly - the Black & Yellow Bash - on Saturday. Team Yellow was victorious in the match-up, with Greg Hurst netting twice, and Amando Moreno adding a second-half exclamation point. Team Black's goal came from the penalty spot, as Alex Waggoner drilled one home after being taken down in the box.
The 13th minute saw Hurst score first, as a cross from Moreno deflected off of a defender and into Hurst's path. The Scotsman speared the bouncing ball, hitting it past Ford Parker on the first touch for a 1-0 lead for Team Yellow.
Four minutes later, Team Black nearly equalized off the foot of U-23 star Lamar Bynum. Bynum received a bouncing ball about ten yards out and hit a first-time volley that got by Team Yellow goalkeeper Alex Tambakis, but hit the inside of the post, bouncing in front of goal before being cleared away.
Just before halftime, it was again Hurst on the scoresheet. This time, pouncing on a saved ball from Parker and tucking home. Parker made a terrific diving stop, and the rebound may have sailed over the bar on any other day. But the high winds at the First Financial Credit Union Training Center kept the rebound in play long enough for Hurst to tap in for his first brace as a member of the Black & Yellow.
In the second half, Moreno tapped home for Team Yellow's third score, after Hurst found him open on the right side of the six-yard box. The goal was Moreno's second of the preseason. Waggoner pulled one back from the spot for Team Black after he was judged to have been brought down in the box. That finish was the last kick of the match.
In one week, United will kick off the regular season - their fifth in USL Championship play - on the road at Miami FC. All United matches - home and away - will be broadcast on ESPN+.
