Philadelphia Force News Release
The New England Riptide was back on Martin Softball Field Thursday July 6 for the second game in a series of four with the Philadelphia Force. The Riptide took the game 1-0 in the eight inning.
Jocelyn Forest started the game in the circle for the Riptide.
Forest has been the most successful pitcher for New England so far this season compiling a 4-2 record with two saves on the season. The Riptide defense started off strong behind Forest in the circle and quieted the Force at the plate through the second inning. Forest single-handedly put away the bottom of the second. After striking out Jenna Hall for out number one Forest fielded consecutive ground balls back to the circle by Jaime Dacey and Lindsey Cameron and threw to Lyndsey Angus at first for outs two and three.
The Riptide continued to contain the Force at the plate, as Forest carried a no hitter through to the top of the sixth when Stacie Pestrak bunted her way on. New England struggled offensively failing to produce runs against Philadelphia pitcher Stephanie VanBrakle.
New England saw its biggest scoring opportunity in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tarrah Beyster sent a base hit into left centerfield with one out in the inning. Kristine Botto was entered to pinch run for Beyster. VanBrakle hit next batter Kristin Vesely to put two on for the Riptide. Lisa Allen was entered to pinch hit for Jackie Pasquerella but flied out to shortstop Chelsea Spencer for out number two. VanBrakle walked KJ Kelley to load the bases for the Riptide. Erica Beach came to the plate to pinch hit for Tiffany Stewart and was struck out by VanBrakle to end the inning stranding three on the bases for New England.
The game quickly became a pitchers dual between Forest and VanBrakle.
The game remained scoreless through the seventh inning sending it into extra innings. New England rallied in the bottom of the eighth looking for a quick end to the extra inning contest. Angus led off with a single that put the winning run on for the Riptide. Beyster laid down a sacrifice bunt that advanced Angus to second with one out in the inning. VanBrakle walked Vesely and Pasquerella loading the bases for the ?Tide. VanBrakle broke down walking Kelley sending Angus home for the 1-0 victory. Forest had nine strikeouts and recorded her fifth pitching victory of the season.
The 'Tide are back in action tomorrow Friday July 7 at 7:05 pm to take on the Force in game three of the four game series.
