NAHL names Players of the Week
Published on December 8, 2005 under North American Hockey League (NAHL) News Release
FOX'S SIX POINTS EARN SHER-WOOD NAHL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK It was a three-point weekend for the Fargo-Moorhead Jets thanks to a six point weekend for Phil Fox. Those points have earned selection for Fox as the Sher-wood NAHL Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending December 4.
On Friday night, December 2, on the road in Alexandria against the Minnesota Blizzard, Fox set up a goal with under four minutes to go in the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Then, with just under four minutes remaining in regulation time, Fox scored the game winner, giving the Jets a 2-1 triumph.
The next evening on home ice, the Stillwater, Minnesota native, scored midway through the second period to tie the Blizzard 1-1. The Blizzard then scored a pair of goals to retake the lead, only to have Fox set up a goal late in the second period and two more midway through the third to put the Jets in the lead. The Blizzard would eventually tie the game and win in a shootout, but thanks to Fox, the Jets did get a point out of the contest.
Fox, who led the Jets in scoring last season, has eight goals and 19 points in only 14 games this season. He is scoring 1.4 points per game -- which is the highest average of any Jet -- and is now fourth on the all-time franchise scoring list with 89 points. The Jets' all-time leading scorer is Chris Myhro with 117 points.
HONORABLE MENTIONS: Brett Burgau (Minnesota), Chris Fairbanks (Mahoning Valley), Andrew Harrison (Texas), Thomas Petruska (Cleveland), Jeremy Robert (Bismarck), Jacob Roadhouse (Mahoning Valley), Dan Sexton (Wichita Falls), Jason Wiley (Southern Minnesota)
JR. BLUES' GARMAN, EXPRESS' CARLSON SHARE SHER-WOOD NAHL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
A goaltender and a defenseman share the honors as Sher-wood NAHL Defensive Players of the Week for the week ending December 4.
The Jr. Blues hit the road to Texarkana last weekend, always a difficult place for a visiting team, but came away with a pair of victories, backstopped by goaltender Mike Garman.
On Friday night, December 2, the Bandits fired 40 shots at Garman, 30 in the first two periods, but the Vail, Colorado native held the fort by surrendering no goals on 10 shots in the final period while the Jr. Blues scored twice to earn a come-from-behind 4-3 victory.
The following night, Texarkana launched 45 shots at Garman, and once again he closed the door in the third period, stopping all 14 as Springfield again rallied, erasing a 3-1 deficit and turning it into another 4-3 win.
Stopping 79 of 85 shots against a strong foe in their barn, Garman improved his season mark to 8-7-1 and his save percentage to .915 on the season.
Of the NAHL's new teams, the Southern Minnesota Express has gotten off to the best start, as they now stand second in the Central Division and sixth overall in the NAHL. One of the reasons for their strong play has been the strong play of defenseman Jeff Carlson.
On Saturday night, Carlson scored the go-ahead goal against North Iowa, giving the Express a 2-1 lead in the last minute of the first period, after which they never trailed again. In the second period, he set up the eventual game winning goal as Southern Minnesota cruised to a 5-2 victory over their rivals.
The next afternoon, on the road in Mason City, the Richfield, Minnesota native again set up the go-ahead goal that gave the Express the lead for good before adding another assist on an insurance tally, as Southern Minnesota took the back-end of the home and home series by an 8-3 score.
Carlson is now second among all NAHL defensemen in scoring with four goals and 15 assists, for 29 points, just three shy of Texas defenseman Brett Blatchford.
HONORABLE MENTIONS: Thomas Billick (Wichita Falls), Pat Goebel (Cleveland), Max Dodds (Minnesota), Jan Kivisto (Mahoning Valley), Brady Olson (Bismarck), Colin Young (Texas).
