Mat-Su Miners News Release
KENAI, Alaska - The Peninsula Oilers relied on the arm of freshman Justin Montgomery to earn a 2-0 victory over the Mat-Su Miners in the second day of Alaska Baseball League play.
"I couldn't have asked much more of the pitching staff the last two nights," Miners head coach Ben Taylor said. "It's kind of a shame that we squandered another really good pitching performance. Mick (Vorhof) did a really good job for us."
Freshman Justin Montgomery threw a complete game shutout in his first start for the Oilers. The Cal Baptist right-hander tallied four strikeouts and allowed two hits in his 128-pitch performance.
Grand Canyon right-hander Mich Vorhof allowed two runs in his debut for the Miners. The sophomore fanned four and held the Oilers to five hits in five innings of work.
The Oilers (2-0) scored the first run in the top of the third on an RBI double by ShihTsung Wang. Jacksonville junior Seth DeWitt would later score in the inning on a wild pitch, beating the tag from Vorhof at the plate.
The Miners (0-2) created a scoring opportunity in the top of the sixth, when centerfield Madison Nickens stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by Oilers catcher Jared Huber. Baylor shortstop Josh Bissonette came to the plate for the Miners with two outs, but flew out to right field to end the inning.
"We're just not taking good at-bats right now, but obviously it's an extremely small sample size," Taylor said. "We need to make some adjustments at the plate and how we go about things and it'll take care of itself."
Cam Montgomery and Garrison Schwartz both recorded singles to lead the Miner offense. Freshman Austin Treadwell, Gage O'Brien and Jordan Floyd provided three innings of scoreless relief.
The Miners are scheduled to travel to Mulcahy Stadium to face the Anchorage Bucs on Saturday at 7 p.m.
