MLL Week 8 Recap

Published on July 22, 2019 under Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

Boston, MA - There is an old quote that says "victory is a hundred times better when you're the underdog." That was the case this weekend in Major League Lacrosse as three of the perceived "underdogs" came away with wins heading into the All-Star break.

Atlanta Blaze Vs. Boston Cannons

The Blaze and Cannons both came into this matchup as two of the league's best teams. The Cannons sat at 5-2 while the Blaze were at 4-4.

The Cannons jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the sweltering heat at Veterans Memorial Stadium. It was the Blaze, however, who would catch fire, evening the score at halftime. The Blaze continued their momentum into the third quarter en route to capturing a 15-12 road victory.

The Blaze's stars played like exactly that, stars. Shayne Jackson and Tommy Palasek combined for seven goals, but the evening belonged to Randy Staats. Staats has a ridiculous eight points on two goals and six assists. Staats now leads the league in assists and is tied with Lyle Thompson for the league lead in points with 40.

New York Lizards Vs. Chesapeake Bayhawks

Things were looking bleak for the Lizards. They sat near the basement of the MLL standings and were in dire need of a win. The Lizards have rattled off three wins and are right in the thick of things heading into the back half of the season.

It was rivalry weekend once more as the Lizards traveled to Maryland to take on the Bayhawks. It was the first game of a three game series between the two clubs.

One thing New York has gotten during their three game winning streak is depth scoring and Saturday was no different. The Lizards got hat tricks from Justin Reh and Ryan Walsh. Rob Pannell was good as usual, finding the back of the new three times. Austin Kaut stopped 13 of the 23 shots he saw.

Dallas Rattlers Vs. Denver Outlaws

The Rattlers came into Week Eight still trying to get off the schneid. The Rattlers came into this one winless at 0-7. Meanwhile, the Outlaws sat atop the MLL standings at 6-1.

The Rattlers were tired of losing and it showed. Dallas used dominant first and fourth quarters to pace them to an 11-8 win. The Rattlers outscored the Outlaws 9-2 in the first and fourth quarters combined. Bryce Wasserman scored three goals, but the game was all about Rattlers netminder Sean Sconone. The Umass product was brilliant in net, stopping 20 of the 28 Outlaws shots he faced.

Bill Warder's squad will look to carry the momentum of this win into the second half.

The MLL season continues this Saturday in Annapolis as the 18th MLL All-Star Game commences at Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
