MLL Week 12 Recap

Published on August 26, 2019 under Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

Boston, MA - The Dallas Rattlers have turned the MLL season completely upside down. At 0-7, the Rattlers were well on the way to the number one overall pick in the 2020 MLL draft. Now, six wins later, the Rattlers have their sights set on Championship Weekend in Denver. Here are my takeaways from Week 12.

Rattlers Put the Rest of the MLL on Notice

The Rattlers came into Week 12 facing quite the challenge. They had to play two road games in two days against the two best teams in Major League Lacrosse. The Rattlers saw that challenge as an opportunity and ran with it. The Rattlers beat the Boston Cannons on Saturday in Quincy, before downing the Chesapeake Bayhawks in Annapolis to improve to 6-7 on the season.

On Saturday, the Rattlers got their long weekend off to a quick start. Dallas outscored the Cannons 6-2 in the first quarter, 10-5 in the first half. The Rattlers never looked back, beating the then first place Cannons 13-10. The Rattlers got hat tricks from Jack Curran and Bradley Voigt. Sean Sconone made 15 saves on 25 Cannons shots.

The Rattlers had little time to celebrate, as they had to pack their bags for Annapolis. The Rattlers had their second game in less than 24 hours against the Chesapeake Bayhawks. The lack of rest didn't seem to hurt Dallas, as they beat the Bayhawks 14-13.

The Rattlers fell behind late, losing 11-9 heading into the fourth quarter. The Rattlers put up a five spot in a frantic final quarter to make it six wins in a row. Ryan McNamara, the Coca-Cola player of the Game, lit it up from deep, scoring two, two-point goals. The Eagan, MN native had seven points on the evening. Sean Sconone improved to 6-2 in this, his rookie season.

The Rattlers are one game behind the Denver Outlaws for the fourth and final playoff spot. The Rattlers get the New York Lizards at home next weekend in Frisco.

Lizards Eliminated From Playoff Contention

Speaking of the New York Lizards, B.J O'Hara's squad was officially eliminated from playoff contention following their 16-13 loss to the Denver Outlaws.

At 3-10, the Lizards will miss the postseason for the first time since 2017.

In this weekends game, John Grant Jr. scored two goals to become MLL's all-time regular season points scorer. For the Lizards, Dylan Molloy and Brendan Kearns scored four goals apiece.

Their Tickets to Denver Will Have To Wait

The Boston Cannons, Chesapeake Bayhawks, and Atlanta Blaze all had chances to clinch playoff berths coming into Week 12. However, none of those teams were able to punch their tickets to Denver. The Cannons and Bayhawks losses to the Rattlers killed their chance at clinching a shot in the postseason, while the Blaze's loss to the Bayhawks on Saturday ended their postseason chances for now.

Looking Ahead

The MLL season continues next weekend with two games on the Week 13 slate. The Rattlers look to make it seven in a row at home against the Lizards while the Cannons are in Denver to take on the Outlaws.
