MLL Week 11 Recap

Published on August 19, 2019 under Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

Boston, MA - It's coming down to the wire. Following three competitive games in Week 11, the MLL standings are once again stuck in a log jam. The Boston Cannons win over the Chesapeake Bayhawks, puts the two teams in a first place tie. The Atlanta Blaze's win over the New York Lizards puts them only a half game off the pace.

Blaze Knockout Lizards

The Atlanta Blaze traveled to Long Island this weekend looking to put a massive dent in the Lizards playoff hopes.

The game was a back and forth affair with the Lizards jumping out to an early 6-4 lead after 15 minutes. The Blaze looked poised to run away with this one after outscoring the Lizards 7-2 in the second and third quarters. The Lizards, seeing their season slip away, staged a comeback to force overtime. Bryan Cole scored the game winner for the Blaze in overtime to give Atlanta a 14-13 win.

Christian Mazzone led the Blaze with four goals, while Cole scored three. Rob Pannell scored two goals for the Lizards including the tying goal with a minute left in regulation. The win puts the Blaze half a game out of first, while the Lizards are in last place, 3.5 games out of a playoff spot with four games to play.

Cannons Fire into First Place Tie

It was a weekend full of overtimes in Major League Lacrosse with the Cannons and Bayhawks also needing an extra period to decide a winner.

The Cannons and Bayhawks came into the game separated by only one game in the MLL standings. Saturday's game proved that both teams were among the best in MLL. The Bayhawks and Cannons did battle over the course of sixty minutes with neither team giving an inch. The game was so tight, the score was tied after each quarter. In overtime, Zed Williams was the hero, scoring his third goal of the game to give the Cannons a 12-11 victory.

The Cannons win, means the Cannons and Bayhawks are tied for first place at 7-4. The teams faceoff one more time this season on September 7th in Quincy.

Rattlers Make it Four in a Row

The Rattlers and Outlaws faced off in Frisco this weekend with both teams going in different directions. The Rattlers came in on a three game winning streak, while the Outlaws were on a three game losing streak. The Outlaws were hoping a road win could get their season back on track.

Unfortunately for Denver, they simply couldn't stop Jack Curran. The former Villanova Wildcat, went off scoring five goals in a six point effort. Ryan McNamara also registered a hat trick for the Rattlers en route to a 17-12 home victory.

The loss spells bad news for the Outlaws. Denver, who not to long ago was in first place, now sits in fourth place at 6-5. The Rattlers, vmeanwhile, are making a run. They are only two games back from the Outlaws, with five games to play.

Looking Ahead:

All six teams are in action next Saturday with the Rattlers trying to make it five in a row as they travel to Quincy to take on the Cannons. The Bayhawks and Blaze are set to battle in Atlanta, while the Lizards and Outlaws faceoff in Denver. Finally, the Rattlers and Bayhawks play the Week 12 finale on Sunday.
