MLL Supplemental Draft complete
December 6, 2005 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
Boston, MA (December 6, 2005) - Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced today the results of the 2006 MLL Supplemental Draft. The draft began at 1:00PM ET on December 6 and lasted until approximately 4:00PM ET. The draft was 22 rounds. It is the first draft in MLL history in which all ten teams, the "original six" and the four expansion franchises, selected players. Defenseman Greg Bice was the first overall pick, chosen by the Los Angeles Riptide. Bice is a 2004 graduate of Ohio State University. Chicago acquired MLL veteran Brent Rothfuss with the second overall selection. He has played for both the Boston Cannons and Rochester Rattlers during his MLL career. Former Long Island standout Chris Cercy was taken third by Denver. Cercy was one of the league's top face-off midfielders. Midfielder Scott Falatach and former Baltimore goalie Rob Scherr were taken by San Francisco and New Jersey respectively to round out the top five.
With the seventh overall selection Rochester added former Boston goalie Kevin O'Brien. As a member of the Cannons O'Brien set an MLL record by making 33 saves against Rochester on July 17, 2004. Boston picked Pat Collins with the eighth selection. He appeared in eight games for the Cannons in 2005. Long Island added midfielder Austin Garrison with the ninth pick and Baltimore ended the first round picking midfielder Kevin Frew.
The Philadelphia Barrage did not make a selection until the fifth round (46th overall) where they picked former Cannons defenseman and Bayhawks coach Brian Voelker. The Barrage had forfeited their first and fourth round picks at the conclusion of the Expansion Draft when "original six" teams were given the opportunity to reclaim members of the their 20-man rosters not taken by expansion teams above and beyond the seven they were guaranteed to keep in exchange for forfeiting Supplemental Draft picks. The Barrage, the only team to do this, reclaimed Will Phillips and Andrew Wasik and thus lost two selections. Philadelphia traded its second round pick to Baltimore and its third round pick to New Jersey.
MLL teams whose rosters were less than 35 players at the conclusion of the Supplemental Draft (including those players taken in or protected from the Expansion Draft) were allowed additional picks at the end of the draft. Los Angeles and Chicago each added one player while Philadelphia picked up two. Teams whose rosters exceed 35 players after the two drafts have until 5:00PM ET December 7 to reduce their rosters to 35.
Training camp opens for MLL teams on Saturday April 29. The 2006 MLL season begins three weeks later.
