MLL Player Movement Opens
Published on November 4, 2019 under Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
Boston - With the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) offseason underway after the Chesapeake Bayhawks defeated the Denver Outlaws in the 2019 MLL Championship Game, player movement has opened for select veterans in MLL.
This offseason, players will have the ability to enter player movement which began on October 22 and will last until November 11. Only players who have been in the league for at least five consecutive seasons and whose contract with the league is expiring will be eligible for player movement. Eligible players will be given the opportunity to advise his current club that he wishes to explore the possibility of signing with another MLL team for the next season(s).
To help maintain balance in the league, the MLL establishes a compensation value level for each player that is eligible for player movement. If another team signs an eligible player to a contract then that team will be required to provide the team who lost that player, with the league established compensation. Compensation will be in the form of draft picks and it is possible that some players will have no compensation assigned.
Prior to a player submitting themselves for the player movement program, eligible players are not allowed to be contacted by other teams besides their existing team with the intent of expressing interest in the player joining their team. Team must also refrain from making public statements expressing interest in a player joining their team and cannot use a third party to gauge a player's interest in their team. Players are also not allowed to reach out to other teams to discuss the team's interest in him joining them.
Players that are participating in the player movement program will not be able to be added to post season protected roster until a league contract has been signed or the program term has expired. Each team will be required to submit a protected roster of 23 players on Wednesday, November 20 and if any team adds a player during the movement period they will be required to remove another player off their protected roster before 5:00 pm the next business day.
The MLL player movement system was approved in February 2016 and was implemented after the 2016 season as it gave the players the ability to relocate to a different market for the first time in the league's history. The system was founded with the intent of providing players with the freedom to relocate to different markets and have an effect on different communities for the long-term.
