MLL Partners with Turtle Island for Native American Heritage Month
November 2, 2020 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
Baltimore - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) today announced a partnership with Turtle Island for Native American Heritage Month. Turtle Island aims to spread the knowledge of Haudenosaunee people and the game throughout North America (Turtle Island) and beyond.
Turtle Island Lacrosse was founded in 2020 by Major League Lacrosse players, Brendan Bomberry, of the Chesapeake Bayhawks, and Randy Staats, of the Boston Cannons.
As part of the partnership, Major League Lacrosse will present information and educational resources across media channels on the history and development of the sport of lacrosse throughout the month of November. In the promotion of this educational awareness campaign MLL will promote and support a fundraising initiative for Turtle Island Lacrosse.
"Brendan and Randy, just by suiting up, contribute substantially to the sport of lacrosse," said MLL Commissioner, Alexander Brown. "I am profoundly impressed and moved by this initiative they have taken on, to bring the Haudenosaunee game to young players across North America. We are proud to support them, and we look forward to rallying the lacrosse community to do the same."
Born and raised in Six Nations, Ontario, Bomberry has played at the highest level of the game both box and field lacrosse. On the world stage, in addition to the Bayhawks, Bomberry has played with the Iroquois Nationals, the Georgia Swarm (NLL), Sr. A with the Six Nations Chiefs, Division 1 at the University of Denver before transferring to Syracuse University, and in the most competitive Jr. A league in Canada with the Six Nations Arrows. Bomberry is considered one of the top junior A players in history, as he was the only player ever to win both MVP and the Jim Bishop Award for Leadership, Sportsmanship and Outstanding Play in the same year.
Staats was also born and raised in Six Nations, Ontario, and excelled in both box and field lacrosse. He has played, in addition to Major League Lacrosse, with the Iroquois Nationals, with the Georgia Swarm (NLL), Sr. A with the Six Nations Chiefs, Division 1 at Syracuse University, and in the most competitive Jr. A league in Canada with the Six Nations Arrows. Staats is passionate and ready to share the skills and knowledge he has gained as a player with the next generation.
Turtle Island Lacrosse has developed a curriculum to provide groups and individual players with access to the knowledge and experiences of the Haudenosaunee players' game and culture. The first clinic launched in September, and was a considered a tremendous success. Future trainings will include girls specific training, boys specific training and private 1 on 1 instruction.
