MLL Announces 2005 Wild West All-Star Showdown Rosters
Published on June 20, 2005 under Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
Boston, MA (June 20, 2005) - Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced today the rosters for the 2005 Major League Lacrosse Wild West All-Star Showdown Old School vs. Young Guns, which takes place on Saturday, July 2 at Denver's INVESCO Field at Mile High beginning at 7:00 p.m. MT, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. The game will be broadcast as part of ESPN2's MLL Game of the Week package on Saturday, July 16 at 6:00 p.m. Rosters for the game were determined through fan voting and input from each of the league's six teams.
After a one-year hiatus, the annual exhibition featuring the league's best players returns with a new format. After three seasons of the rosters being split by division, Major League Lacrosse will split this year's participants based on league tenure. The "Old School" team will consist of players who played during the inaugural 2001 season, while the "Young Guns" team will feature players who began their MLL careers anywhere from 2002 to this season.
Notable players on the "Old School" team include Boston attackman Mark Millon, the 2003 Warrior Offensive Player of the Year as well as Long Island goalkeeper and 2004 Warrior Goalie of the Year Greg Cattrano. The "Young Guns" team will feature players such as last year's Cascade Rookie of the Year Ryan Boyle of Philadelphia, Baltimore attackman Mikey Powell and New Jersey midfielder Kyle Harrison, who was this year's top pick in the MLL Collegiate Draft.
The Bud Light Skills Competition takes place at halftime featuring the Fastest Shot, Freestyle and Accuracy contests. Tickets for the Wild West All-Star Showdown are available at the INVESCO Field at Mile High Ticket Office, by phone at 303-830-8497, at all TicketMaster locations and online at www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets are affordably priced at $25, $17.50, and $12.50 with group discounts available.
This season's All Star game marks the first time the MLL will use the Old School vs. Young Guns format. Major League Lacrosse played its first season in 2001 and many of the stars who began their MLL careers that year are still among the best players in the league. The MLL has also seen an influx of young talent beginning in 2002, creating a new era of MLL stars. The new All-Star format will capitalize on the natural, friendly rivalry that exists between the older and younger generations of MLL stars.
The Bud Light Skills Competition returns for a fourth season. In 2004 the competition was hosted by the Philadelphia Barrage at Villanova Stadium. David Evans of the Boston Cannons won his third straight Fastest Shot contest, firing a 109mph laser to win the competition. New Jersey's Scott Urick and David Curry won the Bullseye accuracy competition while Philadelphia's Matt Striebel took home a win in the Freestyle Contest.
