MLL and Lacrosse Mustache Madness
Published on November 9, 2018 under Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
Dear MLL Players, Teams and Fans,
HEADstrong founder Nicholas Colleluori once said "When I am able to be at the games, on the field and watching my team from the sidelines, it's like all that I've been going through really doesn't matter because when I am on the lacrosse field, I am just HEAD, things are normal and I don't have cancer."
Colleluori was a Division I lacrosse player entering his sophomore year at Hofstra University when he was terminally diagnosed with cancer. His public fight from the sidelines captivated the nation and from his hospital bed he created the HEADstrong Foundation. Colleluori hosted the first HEADstrong event in conjunction with Major League Lacrosse in 2005 and in 2012 the league honored Colleluori formally at the MLL All-Star Game. Now in 2018, the league is making a push to get its players, teams and fans behind Lacrosse Mustache Madness, a campaign that started with Colleluori growing his mustache while fighting cancer.
After enduring 14 months of advanced treatment, Colleluori tossed his razor and grew a mustache in the last weeks of his life as a way to take focus off of his apparent weight loss and declining physical appearance. In an uncontrollable situation, his mustache was a humorous way for him to somewhat feel "normal" again. Unfortunately, weeks later Colleluori would succumb to the disease at the untimely age of 21.
In 2009, Ken Clausen created Lacrosse Mustache Madness as a way to pay homage to Nick Colleluori and support the HEADstrong Foundation. Since then more than 8,000 student-athletes have tossed their razors, emulating the last 6 weeks of Colleluori's life and supporting his vision which continues to play a vital role for families across the country overcome by cancer. Lacrosse Mustache Madness has become a fall tradition in the game having raised more than $1,000,000 to improve the lives of families affected by the disease. The campaign runs through November 28th which is the anniversary of Colleluori's passing.
There is still plenty of time to GET GROWING.

Understanding HEADstrong
HEADstrong is NOT a sciences (cancer research) based non-profit organization but rather a services based one that is a direct support system to families financially overcome by cancer. Tackling the affordability and accessibility of care, we specialize in making it possible for families to pursue the most advanced cancer care resulting in the best possible outcomes. We are 100% committed to helping families navigate their fight against ALL cancers by providing financial aid, complimentary lodging, mentorship and inpatient programs.
Why Are HEADstrong's Services So Vital?
Sudden medical debt is the leading cause of home foreclosures in the United States. Due to financial constraints and limited accessibility to the nation's leading cancer centers, many families will NOT pursue the best treatment options. As situations intensify, treatment options narrow, forcing many patients to pursue clinical trials requiring them to travel across country. A relocation is NOT feasible for many families and therefore they forego treatments that may save their life.
