Kansas City Comets select Dino Delevski with first overall pick

(Westport, Conn.) - The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) has held a dispersal draft to allocate players from four teams that will not take part in active play during the 2001-02 season, Commissioner Steve Ryan announced on Monday. Players from the now dissolved National Professional Soccer League's Buffalo Blizzard and Wichita Wings, as well as players from the MISL's Detroit Rockers and Toronto ThunderHawks, were dispersed during the 15-round draft process.

The Kansas City Comets held the first pick in the draft, followed by the Cleveland Crunch, Philadelphia Kixx, Baltimore Blast, Milwaukee Wave, and Harrisburg Heat. This order was retained for the entire selection process.

Each MISL franchise had up to five minutes to make a selection. There were 87 total players available in the draft. The rights of the players from the pool of 87 who were not selected remain available.

The operators of both the Detroit and Toronto franchises, which are members in-good-standing of the MISL and are scheduled to compete in the 2002-03 season, were permitted to designate four players from each of their rosters who will be returned to their respective teams prior to the start of the 2002-03 campaign.

Detroit designated Droo Callahan, Martin Dugas, Martin Nash, and Alan Placek. Toronto designated Mauro Biello, Paolo Ceccarelli, Giuliano Oliviero, and Chris Stathopoulos.

The Kansas City Comets used the first overall selection in the draft to pick forward Dino Delevski. The former Wichita Wings standout was a two-year veteran of the NPSL where he posted 68 goals and 166 points in just 52 games played. Delevski finished third in the NPSL in scoring during the 2000-01 season, recording 139 points on the campaign while being named to the All-NPSL Second Team.

The Cleveland Crunch chose Oliviero with the second overall selection of the draft. The 27-year old forward finished tied for 15th in the NPSL in scoring during the 2000-01 season with 106 points.

The Philadelphia Kixx then used the third overall selection to pick Callahan. A three-year member of the Rockers, Callahan posted 207 blocks while playing in Detroit, including an NPSL-leading 104 denials during the 2000-01 season. The defender was an All-NPSL Second Team selection a year ago.

The Baltimore Blast followed and selected former Buffalo Blizzard midfielder Daniel Barber. Considered one of the indoor game's best two-way players, Barber appeared in 36 games during the 2000-01 campaign and posted 22 goals, 41 assists, 87 points, and 28 blocks.

The Milwaukee Wave then selected former Wichita Wings goalkeeper Jim Larkin with the fifth overall pick. Larkin, a 1999-00 NPSL All-Rookie selection, went 15-13 during the 2000-01 season while recording a 12.71 points against average.

The Harrisburg Heat closed the first round of the draft by selecting Ceccarelli. The 31-year old goalkeeper notched a 16-11 record with the T-Hawks during the 2000-01 season while registering a 12.73 points against average and an NPSL-best .743 save percentage.

The MISL Dispersal Draft also featured one trade in which the Cleveland Crunch dealt defender Scott Schweitzer to the Baltimore Blast for Baltimore's second round pick, which was the draft's 10th overall selection.
