Minnesota's Marty O'Neill Named General Manager of the Year
Published on May 4, 2007 under National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release
Minnesota Swarm General Manager Marty O'Neill has won the 2007 General Manager of the Year Award. O'Neill helped build the Minnesota Swarm franchise from day one and has assembled a team that has quickly found success in the National Lacrosse League. In just their third season as a franchise, the Swarm captured their second playoff berth in as many years in 2007. The club finished with a 9-7 record this season, good for third place in the Eastern Division.
Marty O'Neill joined Swarm for their inaugural season in 2004, being named the first-ever general manager for the team. The former goaltender oversees all aspects of lacrosse operations with the club, including all matters relating to the club's player personnel, coaching staff and scouting, as well as assisting the marketing and promotional departments.
Through his efforts with the team, O'Neill has helped build a successful franchise both on and off the floor. The Swarm have improved their win-loss record every season and have qualified for the playoffs each of the past two years. Despite losing Head Coach Adam Mueller to the expansion New York Titans this past summer, O'Neill was quick to higher Duane Jacobs to take his place. Despite Jacobs being a former assistant coach with no head coaching experience, O'Neill hired him. The decision paid off as the Swarm improved their record from the past season and again qualified for the playoffs.
Previous winners of the General Manager of the Year Award include; Derek Keenan (2006), Bob Hamley (2005), Johnny Mouradian (2004), Kurt Silcott (2003) and Dave Evans (2002).
The award winners are chosen by a vote of the leagues coaches, general managers, and executives.
The award announcements will continue on Monday when the league will announce the NLL Executive Awards and the "Tom Borrelli Award" for Writer of the Year.
The league will announce its season award winners leading up to the 2007 National Lacrosse League Championship presented by Edge Active Care on May 12th. The game will be played at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona at 4PM Eastern/1PM Pacific. The Rochester Knighthawks and the Arizona Sting will meet in the championship game. The game will be broadcast live on VERSUS in the US. Championship Game television plans for viewers in Canada will be announced at a later date.
