Minnesota United FC's Miguel Ibarra Named NASL Player of the Week

September 22, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL) News Release

NEW YORK (September 22, 2014) - Minnesota United FC midfielder Miguel Ibarra was named North American Soccer League (NASL) Player of the Week after scoring both of his team's goals in a 2-0 victory over the host San Antonio Scorpions at Toyota Field.

With the result against the Scorpions, United reclaimed its spot atop the NASL Fall Standings and increased its lead in the Combined Standings to five points. The win on Saturday night snapped the Scorpions' eight-game home unbeaten streak.

"I couldn't have done it without my teammates and most importantly the man above," Ibarra said. "We played really well as a team, and most importantly we got the three points that we needed."

The Lancaster, Calif. native silenced the record crowd of 8,313 at San Antonio's Toyota Field in the 22nd minute, scoring his sixth goal of the NASL campaign after taking pass from midfielder Greg Jordan and placing a shot into the corner of the net to open the scoring.

United doubled its lead in the 72nd minute when Jordan played a perfectly weighted through ball to a streaking Ibarra, who sprinted between two defenders and dribbled around Scorpions goalkeeper Josh Saunders to pass the ball into an empty net. The two-goal performance by Ibarra was all the Spring Season Champions needed to snap the Scorpions' home unbeaten streak and return to the top of both the Fall and Combined Standings.

"I thought it was a brilliant performance by Miguel," said United Head Coach Manny Lagos. "Obviously the two goals he scored were the headlines, but I think the overall game and the energy and effort he put in, like he always does, was fantastic. It's a very well-deserved honor and also a tribute to the kind of year that he is having."

Named to the NASL's Best XI in 2013, Ibarra has played in Minnesota since 2012. He has made 69 regular season appearances, scoring 11 goals and dishing out eight assists in his time with the club.

Prior to joining United, Ibarra played two years of college soccer at Taft College (2008-2009) before transferring to UC Irvine (2010-2011), where he would go on to compile a total of 34 goals and 40 assists. During his collegiate career, Ibarra also spent time with a pair of PDL teams, the Lancaster Rattlers from 2008-2010, and then Orange County Blue Star in 2011.
