Mat-Su Miners News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Although the Scout's Showcase has no influence on the Alaska Baseball League standings, players still feel the pressure to perform well in front of Major League Baseball scouts.
The Mat-Su Miners offense did not seem bothered by the stress on Friday, exploding for seven early runs in a 7-4 defeat of the Anchorage Glacier Pilots at Mulcahy Stadium.
Dual-threat athlete Jacob Hughey continued a strong offensive performance by posting the Miners first run in the first inning on an RBI single to score shortstop Josh Bissonette. Designated hitter Michael Donadio followed with a sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 2-0.
Designated hitter Tyler Walters responded for the Glacier Pilots with a single in the bottom half of the inning to score second baseman Luke Ritter. Rightfielder Isaac Feldstein added a sacrifice fly in the ensuing at-bat to knot the game at 2-2.
Mat-Su regained the lead on an RBI double from Bissonette in the top of the second inning, stretching the lead to 5-2 on a one-run single from centerfielder Brooks Stotler and an RBI groundout by Hughey.
The Miners would tack on two more runs in the top of third, as catcher Andy Cosgrove doubled to the centerfield gap to score leftfielder Scooter Bynum. Third baseman A.J. Lee followed with a single to plate Cosgrove and give Mat-Su a 7-2 advantage.
Anchorage would chip away in the bottom half of the fifth, as Feldstein launched a solo shot over the right field fence to cut the deficit to four runs.
The Glacier Pilots added another run in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch, but the effort would not prove enough, as the Miners left Mulcahy Stadium with a 7-4 victory.
Mat-Su starting pitcher Tyler Wyatt earned the win after 4.2 innings of work on the mound. The right-hander surrendered two runs on six hits while walking five batters.
Relief pitcher Mick Vorhof contributed 2.1 innings of relief for the Miners, striking out two batters and holding the Glacier Pilots to two runs.
Anchorage starting pitcher Cole McKay lasted two innings on the mound, allowing five runs on five hits. The Glacier Pilots bullpen combined to throw the remainder of the game, allowing two runs and six hits.
The Miners continue the Scout's Showcase with a 7:30 p.m. matchup on Friday against the Anchorage Bucs.
