ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Mat-Su Miners battled wet conditions on the road to split a doubleheader with the Anchorage Glacier Pilots at Mulcahy Stadium on Wednesday.

Mat-Su starting pitcher Connor Higgins led the way in the first meeting between the two teams. The left-hander held the Glacier Pilots to one run on seven hits and fanned four batters in the complete game performance.

The Miners (13-8) struck early in the matchup, when first baseman Jake Scudder capitalized on a throwing error from Anchorage catcher Tyler Walters to give Mat-Su a 1-0 lead.

Later in the inning, Miners catcher Zach Sharpley lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to stretch the lead to two runs.

Sharpley added another run in the top of the fourth, driving a pitch to right field to score rightfielder Garrison Schwartz and stretch the lead to three. Leftfielder Michael Donadio gave the Miners a four-run advantage the following inning on an RBI single to centerfield.

The Pilots (11-12) would respond in the bottom of the sixth. Rightfielder Joe Gillette launched a fastball over the left field fence to cut the deficit to 4-1.

Rightfielder Garrison Schwartz plated the final run of the game for Mat-Su on a past ball in the top of the seventh to secure the 5-1 victory.

Anchorage pitcher Trent Lunsford lasted 4.1 innings on the mound, surrendering four runs on three hits while walking five batters.

The second meeting between Anchorage and Mat-Su proved to be a more competitive affair, as the Glacier Pilots scored the game's first run on a sacrifice fly from Gillette in the first inning.

Scudder tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI double in the top of the fourth, and third baseman Angelo Armenta followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Miners a 2-1 advantage.

The Glacier Pilots would swing the momentum in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Gillette to knot the game at 2-2.

Anchorage infielder R.J. Cordeiro led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple to right field, and catcher Tyrus Greene followed with a sacrifice fly to plate the game-winning run in the 3-2 victory.

The Miners currently hold a three-game lead in the Alaska Baseball League standings over the Glacier Pilots, Peninsula Oilers and Anchorage Bucs.

Mat-Su returns to Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer tomorrow at 7 p.m. for a home matchup with the Chinooks.
