Mat-Su Miners News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - With a number of Major League Baseball scouts in attendance, Friday's meeting between the Mat-Su Miners and Anchorage Bucs proved to be more than just another summer game.
As future draft evaluations were being compiled in the stands, the Miners pitching staff delivered a commanding performance in a 3-0 shutout victory over the Bucs at Mulcahy Stadium.
"We have talented players that play the game really hard and respect it in the way they play," Miners head coach Ben Taylor said. "We try and run things from the top down as a first class organization. It starts with the board of directors and our general manager Pete Christopher, and goes to our coaching staff and players. These guys represented us all very well today."
The Miners offense struck in the opening inning, as second baseman Levi Jordan tagged up on a sacrifice fly from leftfielder Garrison Schwartz to give Mat-Su a 1-0 lead.
Centerfielder Scooter Bynum added to the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, dropping a single past the Anchorage infield to score shortstop Angelo Armenta and stretch the lead to two runs.
Schwartz plated the final Mat-Su run of the evening on a solo home run over the left field fence in the top of the seventh.
Mat-Su starting pitcher Jordan Frederick tossed four innings from the bump to earn the win Friday night. The right-hander limited the Anchorage offense to four hits while striking out two batters.
"He's really helped us by putting length in our bullpen, but he can also be a spot-start guy as well" Taylor said. "He's a valuable asset for us."
Relief pitcher Stephen Kolek entered in the fifth and threw a hitless inning while recording two strikeouts. Reliever Gage Burland entered in the following inning and retired the side after surrendering a leadoff hit.
Miners closer Jordan Floyd earned the save with a hitless seventh inning on the mound.
Anchorage starter Sean Sparling lasted four innings on the mound, surrendering two runs on eight hits. Reliever Dalton Chapman took over in the fifth and held the Miners to one run on three hits.
Armenta led the Mat-Su offense with two hits in three at-bats, while designated hitter Tyler Wyatt added another two hits.
The Miners return to Anchorage on Saturday for a 7 p.m. meeting with the Bucs as the final game of the Scout's Showcase. The Alaska Baseball League Home Run Derby and All-Star Game are scheduled to follow on Sunday.
