Saint John Riptide News Release
Barre, VT: The Manchester Millrats shot past the Montreal Sasquatch 105-98 in the opening round of the Green Mountain Tip Off Tournament in Barre, Vermont.
Manchester held a firm 52-40 halftime lead over the Sasquatch, and blew the game open on an 18-8 run behind the hot hand of Desmond Ferguson. Ferguson drilled three three pointers and a two point turnaround jumper during the several-minute stretch.
Manchester led by as many as 25 points late in the third quarter before Montreal began a furious comeback. Former SNHU star Bobby Miller came alive from the perimeter in the fourth quarter, and the Sasquatch came as close as 93-89 with just under four minutes remaining. On the ensuing possession another SNHU star, Sam Carey for the Millrats scored in the paint and drew a foul. His three point play extended the lead back to a safer margin of seven. The Millrats held on to the margin for the remaining three minutes to win, 105-98.
Manchester was led by Sam Carey's 17 points, Desmond Ferguson with 16, and PJ Young's 13. Bobby Miller led the Montreal with 24 points in a losing effort.
A scary moment occurred late in the fourth, when the Millrats Ife Anosike blocked a shot and then collided with two Montreal players while falling. He was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures. X-rays were negative and Anosike is expected to play on Sunday when the Millrats face the host Vermont Frost Heaves at 4:00 pm, for the title.
The Frost Heaves, who won back-to-back ABA championships before migrating to the Premier Basketball League, defeated the Quebec Kebs 96-85 in the first game of the day. Manchester was responsible for all of Vermont's losses last season, beating them in 4 out of 6 games.
