Millrats Halted By Cavalry

February 9, 2010 - Premier Basketball League (PBL)
Saint John Riptide News Release

The Manchester Millrats, fielding a largely reworked roster, were halted by the Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry 104-88 at Hesser College.

The fifth Millrat in five weeks parlayed his time in Manchester into an overseas contract, as forward P.J. Young departed this morning for the Dominican Republic. Young had averaged 20 points and 8 rebounds per game since joining the Millrats.

The game had been moved from Sunday due to a conflict with the Super Bowl, and the Millrats tried to use the smaller gym to their advantage against the Cavs. Manchester came out strong, grabbing a quick 10-2 lead at the outset. The Cavalry found their stride abit, and managed to trim the Millrat advantage to 25-23 by the end of the frame.

Manchester maintained a two-point lead at the half, 54-52.

Former NBA All Star and Head Coach of the Cavalry, Michael Ray Richardson, evidently got his halftime points across to his team, as they responded and held the Millrats to just 34 points in the second stanza. Still Manchester was within 88-83 with 5:30 remaining but could not draw closer.

"I am proud of our team the way we fought and competed, and if we do that every game then we are going to be fine," explained Millrats Head Coach Heath Teixeria. "We have guys who have gone from rookies to veterans in just 9 games and they are competing right there with the League's best."

Eric Gilchrese scored 19 points to lead the Millrats, while Stanley Ocitti notched 13. Tyrece Gibbs, Dwight Brewington, and Charles Mason all chipped in 12 points apiece. Lawton-Fort Sill's Rashad Woods led all scorers with 24. The loss dropped the Millrats' record to 2-7 on the season, while the Cavs improved to 6-2.

The Millrats head north on Saturday to face the Quebec Kebs in Quebec City, followed by the Halifax Rainmen on Sunday afternoon in Halifax at the Metro Centre.
