Millrats Fall To Rainmen In Final Quarter
The Manchester Millrats and the Halifax Rainmen had their first regular-season meeting Sunday evening at the Fieldhouse on Southern New Hampshire University campus. The Millrats looked to avenge a four-point pre-season loss to the Rainmen back in December, but came up short as they dropped a 107-99 decision this time.
Both teams proved to be evenly matched with the score knotted at 24 after one. The Millrats relied mostly on their half court game to generate their offense in the first. In the half court, Manchester crashed the boards and took advantage of their second-chance opportunities. They were led by Alexus Foyle, who cleaned the glass with a couple of put-backs on his way to registering eight first-quarter points.
The Millrats opened the second with a 12-4 run that was capped off by a steal from Al Stewart, who passed the ball ahead to a wide-open Foyle for a two-handed slam. The Rainmen then came back with a run of their own to take a seven-point lead, 51-44. The Millrats closed the gap, though, as a put-back dunk by Foyle ignited the team's run to close out the half with Halifax leading, 53-50. Foyle gathered 18 points and 11 rebounds before the intermission.
The teams went back and forth in the third quarter, but Manchester managed to take a slim 82-81 advantage by the end of the frame. Anthony Anderson erupted for 12 points to spark the offense in the quarter. The Millrats also continued to attack the offensive glass as Dwight Brewington hustled for a couple of put-backs in the period.
The teams played even with each other until about halfway through the fourth when Halifax opened up a lead on Manchester. The Rainmen pressed on and extended their lead to take an eight-point victory.
Anderson led all scorers with 27 points. Brewington grabbed 24 points and 15 rebounds, while Foyle added 20 points and 19 rebounds. Meanwhile, Tony Bennett scored 25 to lead Halifax.
