
Miller, Shelton Named Pitcher, Player of the Month

Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Jeff Miller and Detroit Tigers prospect Chris Shelton were named the Arizona Fall League's Pitcher and Player of the Month, respectively, for the month of October.
Peoria pitcher Jeff Miller (PIT) ranks first in the league with a 0.00 ERA and is holding opposing hitters to a .143 average. Miller has allowed only five hits in seven games for the Saguaros. Miller has not given up a walk and has 11 strikeouts for the season.
Miller spent the 2004 season with Pittsburgh's AA affiliate in Altoona, PA. He had a 5-4 record with a 2.91 ERA. Miller struck out 79 Eastern League hitters, while walking only 28. The Bellville, NJ native was drafted in the 15th round of the 2001 baseball amateur draft out of the University of New Orleans. His first professional season was a successful one, leading the New York-Penn League in saves in 2001 for the Pirates' affiliate in Williamsport, PA.
Grand Canyon Rafter's Chris Shelton is among league leaders with a .400 average for the Month. In 65 at-bats, Shelton has collected 26 hits with eight doubles, a triple and four home runs. Shelton has 23 RBIs and scored 12 runs.
Shelton, a Rule 5 selection in 2004 for the Tigers, was originally a 33rd round pick for Pittsburgh in 2001. The 2001 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and an All-Mountain West Conference selection was a standout at the University of Utah. He led the Mountain West Conference with 63 runs scored and 19 home runs while tying for second with a .374 batting average. He tied for 14th among all NCAA Division I players in home runs. Shelton shared co-player of the week honors October 11-October 17th behind a .474 performance, with nine hits, a double, three home runs, eight RBIs and five runs scored.
