Saint John Riptide News Release
(December 9, 2010 Saint John, N.B.): As the snazzy new intro video stated "a new era has begun" as pro basketball made its debut in the Port City. The Saint John Mill Rats entertained and dazzled the capacity crowd of over 6,000 for the first three and half quarters, before losing the lead late and falling to the Quebec Kebs 75-69.
The Mill Rats looked like they might blow the game wide open with a 20 point lead in the second quarter, but the Kebs kept hanging around and closed with 56-47 at the start of the fourth quarter. Mill Rats point guard Eric Gilchrese suffered a leg strain and never returned. Kebs Head Coach Rob Spon, the former coach of the Manchester Millrats, took advantage with full court pressure and the Kebs took a 4 point lead with under 50 seconds to play and held on for the win. Saint John missed 22 of 45 free throws during the contest.
The Mill Rats leading scorer was Marc Egerson with 26 points while Maurice Acker led Quebec with 11.
The Mill Rats get back in action on Friday night as they host the Halifax Rainmen followed by the Vermont Frost Heaves on Saturday night. Both games are at 7:00pm.
