Milbrett Named Player of the Week

ATLANTA (Monday, April 28, 2003) - New York Power forward Tiffeny Milbrett has been selected as the league's MET-Rx Player of the Week for the week ending April 27, 2003. The U.S. national team striker scored two goals to lead the New York Power past the Carolina Courage 3-1 at SAS Stadium on April 26.

Milbrett, the WUSA's all-time leading scorer with 67 points, started the day in Washington, D.C. with the U.S. national team. To the delight of New York Head Coach Tom Sermanni, Milbrett did not see action for April Heinrich's squad in a 6-1 victory over Canada at RFK Stadium. Along with Power teammate Christie Pearce, Milbrett jumped a flight to Cary, NC just in time to make the starting lineup for New York. She scored her first goal when she slipped in behind the Courage back line and redirected a pass with a deft flick into the right corner of the net. Milbrett registered her second goal of the game when she curled a dipping free kick over the wall and just under the crossbar from 18 yards in the 73rd minute.

"All the credit in the world to Millie (Tiffeny Milbrett)," said Carolina Head Coach Jay Entlich after the game. "I even told our team that organizationally we couldn't have done really anything different on that set piece. Millie steps up and just puts it right under the bar. My hats off to Millie on that shot. It was just an incredible shot."

Milbrett captured 42 points in the voting (16 first place, 10 second place) to narrowly defeat Boston's Maren Meinert (35 pts.). Washington's Kelly Golebiowski (7 pts.), Atlanta's Kylie Bivens (2 pts.), San Diego's Julie Fleeting (2 pts.) and Washington's Siri Mullinix (2 pts.) also received votes. The MET-Rx Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
