Miami Manatees News Release
MIAMI, Fla. - Miami Manatees Head Coach Zac Boyer today announced the signing of left wing Bruce Watson. Despite only playing 26 games last season, Watson was fourth in points with 41 for the Cape Fear Fire Antz.
"I think he is a complete package hockey player." Boyer said. "I think he has the potential to be a top three hockey player in our league.
The 6-foot-two, 227-pound forward recorded 20 goals and 21 assists in 26 games during the regular season. Watson was second in the Atlantic Coast Hockey League in penalty minutes with 268.
At the conclusion of the Fire Antz season, Watson went on to play one game for the West Coast Hockey League (WCHL) Fresno Falcons where he recorded a point. Next he joined the WCHL San Diego Gulls where he had six goals and four assists and 43 penalty minutes in 12 regular season games and two goals and 35 penalty minutes in seven playoff games.
"As an owner, I'm excited to have Bruce on our team." Miami Manatees owner and WHA2 league founder David Waronker said. "He is a very hard worker, strong skater and will drop the gloves at any time.
"More importantly he has strong leadership skills and is a strong supporter and volunteer for charitable events in the community.
"As a fan, I love this guy." Waronker said. "He is a player you want to watch play. Each of his shifts on the ice is exciting and he will bring a lot of energy to the building. I have no doubt that he will quickly become a fan favorite in Miami.
"I'm excited about the opportunity." Watson said. "I wanted to be a player/assistant coach this year since it is my sixth year of pro.
"I thought it would be a good opportunity to get my foot in the door and help Zac (Boyer) out on the bench and in the dressing room or whatever he needs me to do in the room, I'll take care of it.
Watson and the rest of the Miami Manatees begin their season in late October at the Miami Arena. They will face the WHA2's Jacksonville Barracudas, Lakeland Loggerheads, Macon Trax, Orlando Seals and a yet to be named Central Alabama team.
