Mellgren Named Player of the Week
May 20, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release
ATLANTA (Monday, May 20, 2002) - Boston Breakers forward Dagny Mellgren has been selected as the WUSA's Player of the Week for the week ending May 19, 2002. Mellgren scored two goals, including the game-winner, as the Breakers defeated New York 2-1 on May 18 at Mitchel Athletic Complex.
The Norwegian speedster opened the scoring in the 9th minute of the game when she ran onto a through ball from Maren Meinert. Following a defensive clearance by New York, Boston midfielder Sarah Dacey headed the ball to Meinert. Meinert's beautiful full-volley pass positioned a racing Mellgren behind the defense, and she beat New York goalkeeper Saskia Webber from 19 yards with a dipping shot to the right side of the goal. Mellgren's speed and clever runs presented problems all evening for New York's back line.
After New York had evened the score, Mellgren came up big in the 88th minute when she found herself all alone six yards from the goal and converted on Sarah Yohe's cross for her second tally of the game. For Mellgren, the game marked her return from playing for the Norwegian national team, where she scored three goals in two World Cup qualifying games. She now has three goals for the Breakers this season.
After four weeks with American players winning the weekly honor, the past two weeks have featured international stars taking home the WUSA Player of the Week award.
Mellgren, who had 27 points in the voting (12 of the 16 first-place votes), outdistanced teammate Maren Meinert (8 pts.), San Diego's Julie Foudy (8 pts.), Boston's Karina LeBlanc (2 pts.) and Atlanta's Charmaine Hooper and Briana Scurry (2 pts. each). The WUSA's Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
