Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(LANCASTER, CA) - Everything went according to plan on opening night for the Lancaster JetHawks- right until the bottom of the ninth inning. The High Desert Mavericks scored three runs in the final frame to come from behind and defeat the JetHawks 9-8.
The JetHawks had come from behind themselves to build a lead. Down 3-1 heading into the sixth, Lancaster's offense exploded for six runs. Jon Still tied the game with a two-run homer. Zak Farkes then doubled before RBI singles from Argenis Diaz, Chih-Hsien Chiang, and Lars Anderson gave the JetHawks a four-run advantage.
Travis Beazley was solid in his 2008 debut. Beazley retired the first ten batter he faced before allowing three runs in the fourth. The JetHawks bullpen, however, struggled as each of the three relievers allowed a run. The Mavericks notched at least one tally in each of the last four innings, before getting three runs in the bottom of the ninth of closer Josh Papelbon to earn the come-back-win. The JetHawks were hurt by two late errors and five walks over the final four innings. The two runners who reached on errors and two of the batter who drew walks ended up scoring runs.
Several players chipped in offensively as all nine JetHawks reached base safely. Farkes continued to pound High Desert pitching, driving three doubles. Jorge Jimenez added three hits as well, while Reid Engel had a pair of singles.
The JetHawks continue the road trip Friday night at High Desert. Adam Mills will take the mound for his Lancaster debut while the Mavericks counter with Ricky Orta. The game starts at 7:05 with the pre-game show on Magic 1340 and www.JetHawks.com begins at 6:50.
The JetHawks home opener for the 2008 season at Clear Channel Stadium takes place on April 10 against the Lake Elsinore Storm. Tremendous ticket packages starting at only $56 are available for purchase now by calling 661.726.5400.
