
Matty Berniers Earns Calder Memorial Trophy as NHL Rookie of the Year

Former USA Hockey NTDP forward Matty Berniers has been named the recipient of the Calder Memorial Trophy as the 2022-23 National Hockey League Rookie of the Year.
In his first season with the Kraken this year, Berniers led NHL rookies in goals (24), points (57) and plus/minus (plus-14) in 80 games and was second in assists (33). He had 10 power-play points, 148 shots on goal and four-game winning goals.
In his two seasons in the USHL with USA NTDP, Berniers tallied 18-29- 47 in 49 games played from 2018-20.
The Hingham, Mass., native received 160 of the possible 196 first-place votes for 1,836 voting points. A pair of former USHL defenseman in Owen Power (Chicago Steel 2018-20) and Jake Sanderson (USA Hockey NTDP 2018-20) finished third and sixth in the voting, respectively.
Berniers becomes the third former USHL player to win the Calder Memorial Trophy, joining forward Auston Matthews (USA Hockey NTDP 2013-15) and Gary Suter (Dubuque Fighting Saints (1981-83).
