North York, ON - Vancouver FC will today compete in the club's inaugural Canadian Championship match, a first step in the club's quest to lift the Voyageurs Cup in 2023. Here is everything you need to know about the match, which kicks off at 5 p.m. PT in North York, ON:
MATCH STORY: Wednesday's match offers VFC another opportunity to register the club's first win in official competition, after falling 1-0 to Pacific FC at Starlight Stadium in Canadian Premier League (CPL) play on Saturday. York United is also looking for its first competitive win of 2023, following a 2-0 league loss to Valour FC on opening weekend.
Vancouver will lean on the experience of seven Voyageurs Cup veterans, including 2020 cup winner Kadin Chung, Callum Irving, Rocco Romeo, Gabriel Bitar, Mouhamadou Kane, Elliot Simmons and Marcus Simmons. Together they have competed in 33 Canadian Championship matches, registering 18 wins, four assists and two clean sheets.
Last season, York United reached the semi-final of the competition against the Vancouver Whitecaps, where the Nine Stripes fell 2-1 to the eventual 2022 Canadian Champions. The winner of Wednesday's match will face the Whitecaps in the quarterfinal of 2023 Canadian Championship play next month.
The winner of the 2023 Canadian Championship will earn a berth in the 2024 Concacaf Champions League, where they will have the opportunity to test themselves against the best teams in the region. It is one of three opportunities for Canadian Premier League (CPL) players to earn a berth in next year's Concacaf Champions League, with the regular season and playoff champions also qualifying for the tournament.
