Saint John Riptide News Release
The Manchester Millrats star player from a year ago, Anthony Anderson, hailed from nearby Lynn, Massachusetts; a tough seaside town nicknamed "Shoe City". The Millrats are pleased to announce the signing of another Shoe City product: 5'10 point guard Derek Coleman.
Coleman grew up in Lynn as a kid before moving to Dorchester, a section of Boston. In high school he played for the legendary Jack O'Brien at Charlestown (featured in the new book The Assist), winning MA state championships in each of his four years ('00-03) and compiling a record of 107-7. He was the only player in Massachusetts history to be named the MA State Player of the Year twice ('02 and '03).
Coleman took his considerable talents to Div. 1 Robert Morris University. At Robert Morris, he was named to the All-NEC Rookie team in 2004. As a senior, he averaged 12.8 points, 5.4 assists, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.0 steal per game.
"D.C. is an ultra-competitive fireplug who wreaks havoc on opposing defenses with his ball pressure," explained Millrats GM Ian McCarthy, "he possesses a solid outside shot and is a natural ball distributor."
Last season, Coleman ran the offense for Upstairs Weert in the Netherlands. He attended the Millrats Exposure Combine in September and earned an invite to the Millrats Veteran's Camp, held several weeks ago.
