Edmonton Rush News Release
EDMONTON - The defending NLL champion Colorado Mammoth maintained their undefeated status as they beat the Edmonton Rush 16-9 Friday night before a crowd of 11,065 at Rexall Place.
The win moved the Mammoth to a perfect 4-0 to start the season while the Rush dropped to 1-3.
After a fast paced but low-scoring first quarter that saw the Mammoth hold a 3-1 edge, both teams cranked up the offence in the second quarter. The Rush climbed back with three power-play goals but the Mammoth didn't back down and a goal by Edmonton native Jamie Shewchuk pushed Colorado into a 7-6 lead at halftime.
The Mammoth took control of the game in the second half as a pair of goals on the power play lifted them to a 12-8 cushion. Colorado's offence fired on all cylinders in the fourth quarter and backed by a strong performance from goaltender Gee Nash, the Mammoth cruised to a comfortable win.
Dan Carey and Jamie Shewchuk led the Mammoth with five points each. Carey had two goals and three assists, while Shewchuk had three goals and two assists. Ben Prepchuk, who hails from nearby Sherwood Park, Alberta, scored twice and added two helpers.
Randy Daly led the Rush with five points on one goal and four assists. Former Mammoth players Chris Gill and Dan Stroup, who were acquired by the Rush in the off-season, each found the net against their former club. Gill finished with three goals and one assist while Stroup potted two goals.
Nash notched 40 saves for the Mammoth, while Pat Campbell made 38 stops for the Rush.
The two teams will complete their season series against each other on Feb. 3 when they clash at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
