DENVER - With his team down by a goal and sensing a need for a change in momentum, Colorado Mammoth coach Gary Gait replaced his starting goaltender early in the second quarter. The team responded by scoring the next six goals, a run that would prove to be the difference in the Mammoth's 15-10 victory over the Edmonton Rush on Friday night at Pepsi Center.
After Mat Giles' two goals capped a four-goal run to give Edmonton a 7-6 lead with 9 minutes, 25 seconds remaining in the first half, Gait replaced Gee Nash in goal with backup Chris Levis. The Mammoth's offensive weapons promptly heated up.
First, Dan Stroup scored the first of his three goals on the night and followed it with a razor-sharp pass off of the boards behind the Rush goal that found Chris Gill for an easy score. Brian Langtry then extended the Mammoth's lead to 9-7 with the second of his three goals. By halftime the Mammoth led 11-7 and exited the field to an ovation from the Pepsi Center crowd of 16,732.
"This is a great win," Gait said. "Coming off the All-Star break, we were hoping to gain some momentum and I think we've really come together at the half-way point in the season."
The Mammoth improved to 5-3 with the victory and padded its lead in the West Division standings over Arizona, Calgary and Portland. Edmonton remains in the West basement and dropped to 1-7 with the loss.
Gill scored once in each quarter for a game-high four goals while Mammoth captain Gavin Prout tallied game-highs of six assists and eight points. Stroup added three assists to finish with six points. Josh Sims and Dan Carey each scored once for the Mammoth.
Levis was strong in his relief performance, allowing just three goals on 39 shots, to earn his third victory of the season (3-2). Edmonton starter Pat Campbell took the loss and was pulled after giving up 10 goals on 24 shots. He was replaced by Dwight Maetche, who allowed four goals on 30 shots. Mammoth defender John Gallant added an empty-net goal with 7 seconds left in the game.
