MAHL Celebrates Successful Opening Weekend

November 6, 2007 - Mid-Atlantic Hockey League (MAHL) News Release

Canton, OH - The Mid-Atlantic Hockey League concluded the opening weekend of its inaugural season Sunday when the Indiana Ice Miners defeated the Jamestown Vikings in an afternoon match in Indiana. The opening weekend featured five exciting games, which were attended by 4,800 fans.

"We're very pleased with our opening weekend," commented MAHL President Andrew Haines. "On the ice we had five exciting games featuring a lot of scoring and end-to-end action. Our attendance was better than we had projected, given that we are going up against high school football play-offs and we're still building our identity. Overall, the weekend was a big success."

The weekend's action was highlighted by Indiana forward Justin Depretis, who tallied a remarkable seven goals in two games for the Ice Miners. Friday night also marked the league's first overtime game and first shootout when the Wooster Warriors defeated the Mon Valley Thunder 7-6.

"Justin is a great example of the opportunity the MAHL presents for players," noted MAHL Commissioner Jim Riggs. "The players, the media and the fans have had a very positive reaction to our opening games. The fans and sponsors got a sense for the entertainment and value our clubs offer. Now that the opening weekend is under our belt, it will only get better. This weekend was a great start to building momentum into December."

Three teams (Indiana, Pa.; Jamestown, N.Y.; and Mon Valley, Pa.) played home openers this past weekend. Wooster, Ohio and Valley Forge, Pa. play home openers this Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Season and individual game tickets for the Indiana (Pa.) Ice Miners, Jamestown (N.Y.) Vikings, Mon Valley (Pa.) Thunder, Valley Forge (Pa.) Freedom, and Wooster (Ohio) Warriors are now on sale on the league's website (www.MAHLHockey.com). Game score sheets, up-to-date player and team statistics, team schedules and more is available at www.pointstreak.com.

The MAHL is one of two "class A" professional hockey leagues in the United States. Each MAHL team plays a 50-game schedule from November through March. The league prides itself on being fan friendly and active in the communities in which it plays.
