Scarborough Shooting Stars News Release
The Scarborough Shooting Stars of the Canadian Elite Basketball League announced Monday that Scarborough native Jamaal Magloire has been named Vice President and Senior Advisor of the league's expansion club.
One of Scarborough's most influential ambassadors, the local high school legend was among the first Canadians to achieve the highest level of basketball success as both an NCAA champion at Kentucky and an NBA All-Star, paving the way for the many Canadian NBA stars that have followed. Passionate about Toronto, Magloire has long been involved in local initiatives, charitable endeavours and major events such as Caribana that showcase the city's energy. Nick Nurse, head coach of the Toronto Raptors and of the Canadian men's national team, is credited as being an instrumental part of this connection to the Shooting Stars and the CEBL, with his dedication to the growth of basketball in Canada.
'We are fortunate to have such an amazing home-grown talent involved in the organization," said Nicholas Carino, president of the Scarborough Shooting Stars. "We're excited to learn from his experiences and work together to showcase what our city has to offer."
Magloire, 43, currently serves as basketball development consultant and community ambassador for the Toronto Raptors. He played 12 seasons in the NBA with Charlotte/New Orleans, Milwaukee, Portland, New Jersey, Dallas, Miami and Toronto. The 6-foot-11 center was the 19th pick in the 2000 NBA Draft by Charlotte. He became only the second Canadian to earn NBA All-Star status during the 2003-04 season and led the Eastern all-star team with 19 points, to go along with eight rebounds in 21 minutes.
Magloire finished his NBA career with the Raptors during the 2011-12 season and became the first Canadian born player to play for the Raptors.
