Madison Packer Named Riveters' Captain

Metropolitan Riveters News Release

As they get set to face the Boston Pride in their home opener on Saturday, the Riveters have named their leadership trio. Original NWHLer Madison Packer has been named captain, while veteran Rebecca Morse and rookie Cailey Hutchison will wear the As.

A three-time All-Star, Packer enters the season as the team's all-time leader in goals and points and she is anxious to rebound from the team's rough season.

"Every season is a new opportunity," said Packer. "It's a new group, a new coach, basically a new everything. It's a good opportunity for us to wipe the slate clean."

Morse, who like Packer won the Isobel Cup with the Riveters in 2018, said the club's extremely challenging, road trip-heavy early schedule will help the club develop chemistry.

"We will form a new identity," said Morse. "Something I've tried to reiterate to the team is adding to the foundation that the Riveters organization has built over the first few seasons. We had a strong identity and maybe got away from it a little bit last season. We will bring back the commitment, be a tough team to play against, and have each other's backs."

Hutchison was drafted by the Riveters in December from the University of Maine. "Honestly, being on the Riveters is such a huge honor," she said. "I remember when the team started in 2015 and I said, "That is what I want to do when I'm older. To be here, and put on a Riveters jersey is amazing. But to have a letter too is just so surreal."

Additional notes from Riveters' camp:

Expect an all-RIT line of Brooke Baker - Kendall Cornine - Mallory Rushton at the start.

Nichelle Simon played defense in college, but coach Ivo Mocek has moved her to center. Mocek: "We want to use her work ethic up front and she'll be a key PK player for us alongside Brooke Avery."

D pairs are still evolving, but Nicole Arnold and Colleen Murphy may be set. Sam Walther is likely to get the start in goal on Saturday.

Tickets for the Riveters' home opener on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Boston at ProSkate Ice Arena in Monmouth Junction, NJ are available now at NWHL.zone/tickets.
